Tagging and Social Bookmarking

A tag is a keyword that is added to a digital object to describe it.  Social bookmarking systems allow users to create lists of bookmarks or favorites and store them centrally on a server for easy access from any internet-enabled computer.  This centralized storage allows you to share your bookmarks with others.  Your bookmarks can also be tagged with keywords so that each bookmark can belong to more than one category (e.g. "laboratory" and "teaching idea").  The idea of tagging has expanded to include what are called tag clouds or groups of tags (sets).  Tagging services collate your tag information according to the freqency with which particular tags are used.  These clouds represent another way of looking at your information.

Del.icio.us The original social bookmarking site - save your favorites, tag them, share them.

Diigo a New social bookmarking site that allows you to highlight the relevant part of a web page, add sticky notes, and then archive your favorites.

CituLike A handy research tool.  You add a button to your browser and when you see a paper on the web that intersets you, click the button and add it to your personal library.  It automatically extracts the citation details so you don't have to type them in.
